Ubon Aircraft Accident Photos 1966-68

The photos on this page were provided by Dan Keeton, Ubon 1967-68, 8th FMS and George E. Bryant (USAF SMSgt Ret), Ubon 1966-67 & 1973 (TDY from Seymour-Johnson AFB), 8th FMS.

Story by George E. Bryant, USAF, SMSgt Ret

8th TFW F-4C 63-7687 from the 555 TFS dead sticked at Dong Ha SVN on 19 Sept. '66 after being shot up over the North. A description of the event and landing at Dong Ha written by the pilot, 1LT Peter C. Bruhn, can be found at www .js-net.com/~phantom/8thhistory1966.htm - scroll down to the Sept. '66 entries. Dong Ha is located about 10000 meters South of the DMZ and not to far from the coast.

I was a SSgt from the 8th FMS Propulsion Branch and a part of a 6 person team from the 8th TFW at Ubon sent to salvage as much as possible from the 7687 - team photo available. This was an interesting experience as myself and a couple of other engine guys were tasked to remove the engines which we did while the A/C rested on sand bags on the side of a hill - photos available. The removal was almost by the T.O. (a few deviations like cutting the bay doors off of the A/C) and we used the standard ALC4000 Installation/removal trailer to get the engines out.
One photo shows the engines sitting on the ramp at Dong Ha waiting to be airlifted back to Ubon. Unfortunately I've been unable to find the rest of my photos but some day I'll open a box and there they'll be.
